Gogglebox star George Gilbey died of traumatic injuries, inquest told

Gogglebox star George Gilbey had been working on a roof when he fell to his death through a plastic skylight, an inquest has been told.

The 40-year-old suffered traumatic injuries to his head and torso and died at the scene in Shoeburyness, Essex, on 27 March, the hearing in Chelmsford was told.

The inquest was opened on Monday and suspended after a request from Essex Police pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.

Essex senior coroner Lincoln Brookes granted the request and said the matter would be reviewed in four months’ time.

Gilbey was best known for appearing on the Channel 4 show alongside his mother Linda McGarry and stepfather Pete McGarry, who died in 2021 aged 71.

The family first appeared on the second series of Gogglebox in 2013 but were dropped the following year when the reality star signed up for the 14th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, reaching the final.

A man in his 40s from the Witham area of Essex was previously arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the incident.

He was later released by police under investigation.
